Full Moon in Leo Ritual

Posted by Sharron Basanti on

The upcoming full moon on Sunday, January 20th at 9:16 pm (PST) is in the astrological sign of Leo. Eclipses are gateways for change and excellent for funnelling energy into what your heart wants to manifest. Thus, an ideal day for those who need to do release work before embarking on a new venture.

Leo is astrologically influenced by the element of fire, which is known to burn and consume stagnant energy that needs to be released. The moon is closely connected with the tides, thus the element of water. The sacred water of the oceans, rivers, and lakes is a purifier that gently washes away emotions that are being held onto. I love integrating the elements into my sacred rituals to honour not only the moon, but also the cosmos.

The full moon magnifies the light (boldness, passion, tapping into your creativity, expressing love, connecting with your inner child) and shadow (drama, aggression, dysfunctional relationships, shallowness, stubbornness) astrological qualities of Leo. If you need to release any of Leo shadow qualities then January 20th is the most optimal time, but the day before or after the full moon is fine too!

I originally wrote this ritual for the Leo Full Moon three years ago when I was in the midst of creating the Seeds of Shakti Oracle deck, which is currently sold out! Since then, I've updated the ritual and added a Tarot + Oracle card spread. Please know that you don’t need to do a ritual for each Full Moon, only connect to the ones that you feel drawn to. I recommend holding sacred space for yourself, especially if you feel resistance developing in your heart to the Full Moon energy. . .you will benefit from flushing out what you are resisting, as that energy will eventually become stagnant.

You are welcome to use my ritual or adopt parts to help you create a personalized one. Please remember that there is no wrong or right way, only do what FEELS right in your heart. At times, I’ve lit a candle & said a prayer and that was enough. You can do your ritual a day before, on the day or a day after the New Moon, as the energy is still potent.

My ritual involves hand rolling a beeswax sheet into a candle to connect with the fiery energy of Leo.  I typically use a sheet of blue beeswax to honour the moon and element of water. You can also use beeswax sheets that white or different shades of blue to connect with the water energy. . .or even red/orange/yellow to honour the element of fire. You can find beeswax sheets at your local craft store or online.

Next, I find essential oils that I intuitively feel are connected to the element of fire. I’ve got a blend that I made using cinnamon, clove, and bergamot to stimulate my Solar Plexus Chakra, which is also connect to the element of fire. If you aren’t able to access beeswax sheets before the Full Moon in Leo, you can always substitute in a regular candle, and add two or three drops of your essential oil blend to the top of you wick. At the end of the day, your intention is the most important aspect of the ritual!

On the wick, I add about 5 – 9 drops of my blend. If you don’t have time to create a blend, you can add a few drops of any essential oil. As I roll my candle, I connect to the energy of the Leo Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse by focusing on:

  • How can I release energetic imprints from past dramas?
  • How can I embrace Leo’s shadow medicine?
  • How I can reconnect with my inner child?
  • How can I be more loving towards myself and others?
  • How can I fan the flames of my creativity?

If I feel any blocks rising up as I ponder the aforementioned questions, I release them during the burning of the candle by visualizing the resistant energy going up in smoke and rising into the night’s sky.

You can decorate your candle using silver coloured wire, crystals that are connected to the elements of water or fire, shells, and mirrors. Please make sure that the material you add to your candle isn’t flammable. If you need detailed instructions on how to roll a beeswax candle, please check out YouTube, as there are a ton of instructional videos!

You can also create an altar to honour the energies of the Full Moon and the astrological sign of Leo. I wrote a post awhile back with instructions & ideas on “How to create YOUR sacred altar” that might interest you, especially if you don’t know where to start or are struggling for inspiration. The secret to creating an altar is to only use sacred tools and objects that you connect with.

I recommend burning the candle on the day of the Full Moon, and the day before or after is also fine. You can call in a Lunar Water Goddess that you connect with and/or ancestral guides. Allow your candle to burn all the way down for the release ritual.

To delve deep into the questions that the Full Moon in Leo & Lunar Eclipse conjures up, you may want to lay Tarot or Oracle cards. You can use the spread above to unravel and explore the themes further. Please tag me in your spread on Instagram, as I’d love to know how you connected! You can include #mooninsights in your post to connect with others in the community.

Namaste,
Sharron
