As the Pisces New Moon draws closer, are your dreams becoming more intense and frequent? Is your awareness and ability to recall them heightened? The culprit is Pisces, as the water sign is associated with dreams, especially those that tap into the higher realms and The Moon card! You may also notice that your intuition is keener, you are over flowing with creativity, you feel more deeply, and have a stronger desire to connect with Spirit. You may continue to feel the influence of Pisces for up to 3 days after the New Moon or maybe even longer!
The sacred ritual for the New Moon in Pisces involves consciously accessing your dream state and connecting with your Higher-SELF through ceromancy, a form of divination that involves scrying with candle wax. Ceromancy involves using your intuition to interpret the shapes formed by the candle wax drippings. For the ritual, you’ll need a candle, lighter, toothpick, bowl of cold water, towel paper, and an essential oil (optional).
The New Moon in Pisces is on Monday, February 20th at 2:05 am (EST). You can do your ritual a day before, on the day, or the day after the New Moon, as the energy is still potent. You are welcome to use my ritual or adopt parts of it to help you create your personalized one. Please know that you don’t need to do a ritual for each New Moon, only connect to the ones that you feel drawn to. Your ritual doesn’t need to be complicated. Can be simple as lighting a candle.
As with any ritual, create sacred space for yourself to connect with your Higher-SELF. Depending on your New Moon traditions, you may want to light a candle, call in the elements, directions + guides, make a circle, ring a bell, etc. I personally don’t adhere to any rules or guidelines of how to create sacred space. I follow what rises up for me in my heart space at the time, as the energy of each New Moon is unique, and I want my ritual to reflect where I am vibrationally.
The Ritual
The first step of the ritual requires you to choose a candle colour that connects with the question that you are inquiring about. I suggest focusing on one question per candle. If you don’t have a selection of coloured candles handy, you can substitute a white candle for any colour below.
- Red: Home, family, financial issues, boundaries, change
- Orange: Creativity, romantic relationships, passion, sensuality, sexuality
- Yellow: Confidence, inner-power, courage, career, strength
- Green: Prosperity, abundance, personal development, healing
- Blue: Communication (verbal + non-verbal), writing, channelling, friendship
- Purple: Intuition, development of third eye, visions, dreams
- Pink: Love, romance, heart matters, childhood, fertility
- Brown: Materialization, stability, animals, earth medicine
- Black: Protection, grounding, endings, shadow work
- White: New beginnings, spirituality, ascension
Using a toothpick etch your question onto the side of the candle. Before lighting the candle, you can add three drops of an essential oil (EO) that you resonate with to the wick (optional step). Please don’t rub the essential oil into the candle as skin irritation can occur because the EO has not been diluted in a carrier oil. You can also research the magical properties of the EO. An excellent resource is Scott Cunningham’s book, Magical Aromatherapy: The Power of Scent.
As you light the candle, focus on your question. The flame represents your energy and that of your question, so pay close attention to how your candle burns. A weak or small flame may imply that you need to re-evaluate or re-word your question. A clear, strong flame that burns steadily suggests that the candle will assist you in receiving answers.
If the candle starts to smoke heavily then lower vibrating energy is being cleansed and released. Continuous black smoke indicates that emotional blocks may need to be removed before you can receive clarity regarding your question. A candle that sizzles, hisses, or makes a popping sound can indicate that your ancestors are intervening to assist you. Always follow your intuition when reading the energy of the candle.
Next tilt your candle, so the wax can drip into the water bowl. You may want to go on a meditative journey as the candle burns down by listening to the sacred sounds of the drum, singing bowls, or another instrument. Make a mental note of what colours, symbols, and signs you visualize in your Third Eye. And, also any sensations that you feel during the ritual, as those are cues from your Higher-SELF that you may want to explore further for messages. Don’t be surprised if your cues show up again in your ceromancy reading.
You can move your candle around the bowl to create multiple wax shapes. I prefer to allow a single piece of wax to form because I would rather focus my energy on interpreting one image. I tend to follow the wax drippings with my candle as they move around the bowl to form a large wax image.
When your candle has burned down to the point that you can no longer hold it safely, simply snuff out the flame or let it burn down. Next, reflect on what you see in the bowl. I recommend taking a photo, so you can refer back to the initial impressions that were formed by the wax drippings. Afterwards, gently remove the wax drippings and place them on a piece of towel paper.
One of the reason that I like to drip wax into a bowl of water is so I can read the other side of the wax. And, this is where I frequently find potent messages for myself. Reading wax drippings is similar to staring at the clouds or tea leaves and identifying signs & symbols. Shift your focus to your Third Eye and allow the shape of the wax and its contours to spark your intuition. Use all your senses and be open. I recommend journaling the intuitive hits you receive. Remember to TRUST your intuition!
