Sacred Ritual for the New Moon in Cancer

Posted by Sharron Basanti on

I wrote this ritual last year and have updated the date + time and astrological information to reflect the current position of the moon in the night's sky.

Original Blog Post

The stars will be shining brightly, as the New Moon enters the astrological sign of Cancer at 7:38 pm (PST) on Thursday, July 12th. The Cancer New Moon is a potent one, especially for introverts and empaths like myself. Cancer is a water sign, therefore, you may notice that you are feeling more deeply and desiring more emotional safety & security than usual. You may feel the need to strengthen relationships that require mending.

Cancers are known to love their abode and often don’t drift too far from home, as sacred space is important for them. Another abode is your body, so self-care is an important theme for the Cancer New Moon.

You can do your ritual a day before, on the day, or a day after the New Moon, as the energy is still potent. You are welcome to use my ritual or adopt parts to help you create your personalized one. Please know that you don’t need to do a ritual for each New Moon, only connect to the ones that you feel drawn to. Your ritual doesn’t need to be complicated. Can be simple as lighting a candle.

As with any ritual, create sacred space for yourself to connect with your Higher-SELF. Depending on your New Moon traditions, you may want to light a candle, make a circle, ring a bell; call in the elements, directions + guides, etc. . . I personally don’t adhere to any rules or guidelines of how to create sacred space. I follow what rises up for me in my heart space, as the energy of each New Moon is unique, and I want my ritual to reflect where I am vibrationally.

The Ritual

My soul is yearning for a ritual that ignites the magic of self love and involves water, as the monsoon rains are breathing life back into the dry earth of India. The New Moon in Cancer ritual focuses on lovingly washing away old hurts that might be deterring your heart from expressing and embodying self-love.

The ritual involves creating bath salts that are not only infused with self-love, but also your soul’s energy. The intoxicating smell of roses intuitively triggers love, as the scent is sweet and light. For the ritual, you’ll need Himalayan salt, but you can also substitute in sea salt; rose essential oil (I used absolute 10%, as pure rose essential oil is extremely expensive); 3 dried roses or 1 fresh one; and a few tumbled pieces of rose quartz. You can substitute essential rose oil with lavender, use amethyst instead of rose quartz, and replace rose buds with dried lavender.

Create sacred space by lighting a candle and taking a few deep breaths in to centre your energy. Release all worries, stress and tension from your heart, mind & body. Give yourself as much time as you need to feel grounded. You want your energy to be centred before you start your ritual.

Using a weigh scale, set aside in a bowl 333 grams of Himalayan salt. I prefer to use a scale, as the weight of salt can vary depending on the size of the crystals. The Himalayan salt that I used had large crystals and measured to approximately 1 cup. I created my bath salts in a singing bowl whose sound resonates with the heart chakra, the centre of unconditional love. You can use a regular bowl too.

As I crushed the 3 dried roses with my hands, I delved into my heart space and visualized my heart chakra expanding and radiating self-love. Remember true magick is created through intention. As you make your bath salts be mindful and don’t let your mind wonder. Stay in the present moment and focus on your intention of self-love.

Next, I added 30 drops of rose essential oil, which is a light dilution. . .about 1%. As you add the essential oil to the bowl, focus your energy on all that you love about yourself. What traits are you proud of? What are your strengths?

Now, you’ll need to mix the 3 sacred ingredients that you added into the bowl together. I prefer to use my hands as my rose essential oil is diluted in jojoba oil, and yours most likely is too. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend that you can use a mixing spoon or gloves. As you mix the ingredients together, shift your energy and focus on falling in love with what you perceive as your flaws and imperfections. What weaknesses are you willing to accept and see as power?

Your bath salts are now created, but you may want to energize them with rose quartz, which is known as the stone of unconditional love. You can place a large piece of rose quartz on top of the bath salts or add a few tumbled pieces like I did. I also placed a statue of Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of prosperity (both material & spiritual) on top of my bath salts, as she is also known as the embodiment of inner & outer beauty.

Energizing my bath salts with rose quartz and Lakshmi feels so potent in my heart space for self-love. You’ll intuitively known when your bath salts are energized. What Goddess symbolizes self-love for you? You can add a statue or even an oracle card of her to your bath salts. You can place place the oracle card underneath the bowl. All that matters is your intention, so even saying her name can invoke her energy.

In my eyes, abundance can only be created when a person falls in love with all their scars, imperfections and flaws. Hold sacred space for yourself tonight or even tomorrow, as the energy of the New Moon lingers for a day or two after. . .and let yourself fall in love with who you are now, not who you were or who you want to be.

Plant the seeds of self-love under the New Moon in Cancer. Allow the seedlings to germinate in your heart space and manifest into unconditional love not only for yourself, but for all those who you cross paths with. May love always inspire you!

Pour yourself a warm bath and add the salts into water slowly while saying an affirmation, for example, “I love all my sacred imperfections, which are divine perfections.” You can create a personalized affirmation or use mine. As you bathe, lovingly wash away all that you are holding in your heart and let the salts heal & cleanse your heart, mind and soul!

As I bathe, I will start a new mantra, “Om Sri Maha Lakshmyai Namah” dedicated to Lakshmi, on my rose quartz mala, which I will continue to do until the next New Moon. I may start a new mantra on the next New Moon unless I feel that I need to continue with my current one. You can create an affirmation or search for a mantra that would be helpful for you via Google. If you don’t have a mala, don’t sweat as you can count to 108 repetitions.

To delve deep into the questions that the New Moon in Cancer conjures up, you may want to lay Tarot or Oracle cards. You can use the Caner Full Moon Spread and explore the themes further. Please tag me in your spread on Instagram, as I’d love to know how you connected to the spread! You can include #mooninsights in your post to connect with others in the community.

Namaste,
Sharron
